The Miles Messenger was developed in response to an informal request from British Army officers during the Second World War for a robust, low-maintenance liaison and air observation post aircraft capable of reliable slow-speed operation.
The resulting design was a cantilever low-wing monoplane with a fixed tailwheel undercarriage, powered by the proven de Havilland Gipsy Major 1D inline engine. With retractable auxiliary wing flaps and a distinctive triple-fin and rudder configuration, the Messenger achieved an impressively low stalling speed of just 25 mph, ensuring superb controllability even at minimal airspeeds.
From Military Workhorse to Civilian Favourite
Of the 21 Messenger 1 aircraft produced, 17 survived the war, and most were converted for civilian use as the Messenger 4A. These aircraft went on to serve private pilots, air taxi firms, and business owners, valued for their sturdy construction and STOL capability.
In 1944, the prototype was reimagined as the M.48 Messenger 3, featuring electrically-operated, fully retractable split trailing-edge flaps and a more powerful 155 hp Blackburn Cirrus Major III engine. Although the changes offered minimal advantage over other variants and were not further developed, this model remains a rare and distinctive type in the Messenger lineage.
